Mia underwent palate correction surgery which gave her a natural palate. Since she needed much care, she accompanied her mother to work at The Duck Commander.
At the age of 5, Mia underwent a second lip correction surgery to straighten the lip. While still in surgery, the doctors noticed that her nasal passage had begun to collapse due to scar tissue from the first surgery. The doctors operated around the nose area and Mia was required to wear a nose stint for a few weeks to open and stabilize her nasal passages.
In 2021, her next surgery was done. The bone graft surgery was essential to add bone to the cleft in her upper jaw where there was no bone. During her routine checkup, a large amount of scar tissue from her previous surgeries ensured that her upper jaw had not grown at the same rate as her lower jaw.
This caused an underbite of 15 mm. After using a special headgear for 12-18 months, a successful bone graft surgery was done on her. After her surgeries, her parents began a foundation to bring awareness to raise awareness and funds toward research treatments, and the cause of cleft lip and palate.
