Kelis was born on August 21, 1979 in Harlem, New York. She began her musical career as a student at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, joining the choir and playing the saxophone. Shortly after graduating, she began working with Pharrell Williams leading to a record deal in 1998. Her first album ‘Kaleidoscope’ was released back in 1999 followed by 2001’s ‘Wonderland.’ She had her biggest success in 2003 with ‘Tasty’, spawning the massive hit ‘Milkshake.’
Kelis married rapper Nas in Jan. 2005, following a meeting at the MTV VMA Awards in 2002. She filed for divorce in April 2009 while 7 months pregnant with their son Knight Jones, citing irrencilable differences. She married her second husband Mike Mora in 2014, giving birth to their son Sheperd in 2015, and a daughter in Sept. 2020. Sadly, Mike died in March 2022.
